Scheduling Guidelines
- There WILL be infrequent mistakes or unfavorable circumstances throughout the season when it comes to scheduling; preparing yourself now to remain calm and keep your team calm will pay off if your team is impacted by such an event. Expecting perfection is not realistic.
- The EHMHA Ice Scheduler does not schedule league games; contact your league representative if you have questions regarding game schedules.
- League Game conflicts with tournaments should be reported directly to your respective recreation or competitive coordinator.
- EHMHA does not control East Hants Sportsplex Ice availability or schedule; EHMHA is a customer.
- The EHMHA Ice Scheduler does not directly assign referees and is unable to find referees short notice. The Referee in Chief is responsible for all referees and time keepers scheduling. The Ice Scheduler works closely with the Referee in Chief ensuring the Referee in Chief has the updated game schedule for the upcoming weeks and notifies of any last minute game changes.
- Once the schedule is complete and posted; the ice assigned to each team is the responsibility of the team. (See Conflicts, Cooperation, NOTES below)
- For instances where two East Hants teams play each other, the game counts towards the yearly total for the home team listed on the league schedule.
- Winter weather will not mean scheduled ice will be cancelled and made up at a later date. Every individual should assess their comfort level travelling in winter or other potentially unsafe conditions and do what is best for your own safety.
- The East Hants Sportsplex almost never closes therefore schedule ice is allotted to the team scheduled for it
- Games may be cancelled because of weather conditions; that game ice is assumed to be used by the team for practice and will be allotted to the team scheduled for it.
- The Ice Scheduler tries to be fair with all ice times week to week. A lot of time was spent to create the complete season schedule so parents and players can plan ahead as much as possible. If you see mistakes, please contact the Ice Scheduler.
- Ice times are scheduled based on many factors such as:
- ice time availability
- age of the teams (how early or how late the team should practice)
- proximity to other practice and home game times scheduled
- the number of weekly practices the team gets according to their budget
- U9 and U11 will be scheduled for the early afternoon times
- Ice times are scheduled based on many factors such as:
Conflicts, Cooperation (Ice Swapping)
There WILL be conflicts for every team.
In order to resolve conflicts, teams need to be somewhat flexible and work together to swap ice.
In order to resolve conflicts, teams need to be somewhat flexible and work together to swap ice.
- The intention of providing a complete yearly schedule is so teams can see their practice times well ahead of time and find conflicts with tournaments, games, school events as soon as possible and start working towards finding suitable ice swaps with other teams.
- Every effort has been made to minimize the number of consecutive days a team is on the ice, but there could be weeks where a team is on the ice 3-4 days in a row. This gets even trickier when it comes to finding ice swaps, so please be aware of this.
- When you make a successful ice swap, you DO NOT need to inform the EHMHA ice scheduler, but you should notify the Sportsplex front desk so they can update the digital board to reduce confusion.
Extra Ice, Exhibition games
EHMHA wants every team to use their miscellaneous budget for as much extra ice as possible.
- The East Hants Sportsplex will no longer allow teams to book ice and charge back to EHMHA as part of their yearly budget. If teams book extra ice, they are responsible for the cost directly to the East Hants Sportsplex or any other facility according to their booking rules.
- The EHMHA Ice Scheduler will not schedule exhibition games this season. If teams have exhibition games planned, they are fully responsible for scheduling and paying for the ice and referees directly.
End of the Season
Most of you know there are 21 weeks of hockey scheduled on average each year. The EHMHA scheduler keeps a close eye on the amount of games and practices each team receives for the season. The scheduler will be in close contact with teams so they know when they can expect to run out of ice at the end of the season.
- Every effort is made to get teams on the ice for about 21 home games and all of their allotted practice time. Be prepared that winter weather, makeup games, or other unplanned interruptions to the schedule may mean any individual team may receive slightly more or slightly less game or practice time than planned at the beginning of the year. For example if winter weather cancels a game for a recreation team, that ice is allocated against practice hours but also means fewer home game hours are now available. Depending on how many times something like this happens to an individual team, it could mean they will not play 21 home games. It will likely also mean that teams will run out of practice ice before the league ends. This is mostly what your miscellaneous budget is for. Plan wisely.
