Update to Criminal Record Check / Vulnerable Sector Check Process for HRM Volunteers

Hockey Nova Scotia has advised of an important change to the Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) process for volunteers who reside in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

What’s Changed?

Sterling Backcheck (My Backcheck) is no longer able to provide Criminal Record Checks that include a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). Since a VSC is a mandatory Hockey Canada and Hockey Nova Scotia screening requirement for coaches, managers, trainers, board members, and other volunteers, a new process is now in place.

Halifax Regional Police is now offering an online screening process through Triton.

New Screening Link

Volunteers who live within HRM can complete their Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check online through Halifax Regional Police:

https://secure.tritoncanada.ca/v/public/landing/HalifaxPoliceService/home

Important Information

  • Halifax Regional Police will only process Criminal Record Checks for residents of HRM.
  • Volunteers who live outside HRM must apply through the police service responsible for their own jurisdiction.
  • All applicable volunteers must complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) that includes a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
  • A Hockey Nova Scotia letter is required to receive the reduced screening fee.
  • Applications may be completed online or in person at Halifax Regional Police Headquarters.
  • If fingerprints are required, applicants will receive instructions from Halifax Regional Police.
  • If identity verification is required, applicants must complete that step within 15 days of notification or the application will be cancelled and fees will not be reimbursed.
  • Processing times are typically up to 14 days, depending on application volume.
  • Completed results are only available for 30 days, so volunteers should download and save a copy promptly.
